Who does K Brosas think she is?

How do you size up a girl who goes by the first name K?

Well, maybe she has the K – as in Karapatan, or right/reason – for doing so, matching it with a contrasting surname like Brosas.

K actually stands for Kakai but doesn’t that name sound, well, provincial (bakya)?

"So why not just K?" says the owner of that name. "Sounds good and easy to recall pa."

That’s why when she joined The Boxers as replacement for Gladys Guevarra, the group’s name had to be changed from Gladys and The Boxers to K and The Boxers, and it clicked even more. That was five years ago. The Boxers served as K’s stepping stone into the GMA noontime show where she’s a regular co-host (along with, among others, Gladys Guevarra).

Before showbiz, K was, as she puts it, "all over." Literally.

"Lahat ginawa ko," she elaborates. "I performed solo in Korea, Indonesia at kung saan-saan pa."

She’s a Waray (from Borongan, Eastern Samar, townmate of Boy Abunda and Aster Amoyo) but she grew up in Manila. She finished high school at St. Paul’s (Quezon City) where she enroled in a B.S. Tourism course (undergraduate) – "Why Tourism? Kasi gusto ko maging tourist."

"I really wanted to be in showbiz since I was a kid," says K, 30.

"Pero napaglipasan ako ng panahon. I was losing hope. I couldn’t believe that at 25 puede pa ako."

She’s in Bitoy’s Funniest Videos (hosted by Michael V) and Hokus Pokus (with Bong Revilla and Rufa Mae Quinto), both aired Saturday nights on GMA.

And on Saturday, Nov. 19, she’s starring in her first solo concert, K. Bro (Alive in Manila), starting at 8 p.m. at the Music Museum. Produced by Backroom, Inc. and directed by Floy Quintos, the show features as guests The Boxers, Kyla, Rufa Mae Quinto, Keanna Reeves, Erik Santos and The Whiplash.

Told that she’s now on the same level with Rufa Mae, the reigning Sexy Comedienne, K blurts out, "Wow, s–t!" She can’t, she doesn’t believe it.

So who does K Brosas think she is and where does she think she really stands?

Do you think you really have "k"?

"I think so. I don’t think I would have lasted this long if I don’t have ‘k’. Besides, K is my name. Wala kayong choice."

Do you have "k" to be pitted against Rufa Mae?

"In all modesty, I say, ‘Wala po.’ No competition. Rufa is my bestfriend in showbiz. Mas sikat naman siyang di hamak."

Do you think you’re getting good pointers from Rufa Mae?

"Not where making people laugh is concerned. But about personal affairs, yes, we exchange notes, we compare notes."

Do you think you’re sexy?

"Oo naman – in my own little way, especially after I lost 25 pounds in one month. How did I do it? I don’t eat at night. No food after six. I’ve stopped taking soda and coffee. I now weigh only 125 lbs., which is perfect for my height, 5’8". Pang-beauty queen, di ba?"

Do you think you’re funny?

"Yes – definitely!"

Do you think your comic style is better than those of other comediennes?

"In a way. I like to think that my style is natural. Hindi ko kailangan magkaroon ng (physical) defect para ako magmukhang katawa-tawa. I think my voice helps – malaki, husky. It makes me a babaing dragon."

Do you think you were born funny?

"I think so. Since birth. When I was born, I didn’t cry – I was laughing!"

Do you think you’re a tomboy?

"Yes, I must admit...I used to be, especially in high school. Nanliligaw ako ng babae noon. It happens especially in exclusive school for girls. No, boys were never off limits sa buhay ko. I realized that when I went to San Beda during its foundation day. I found the Bedans attractive. I told myself, ‘S–t! Babae pala talaga ako!"

Do you think guys are attracted to you?

"Sana po. But I think I’m not. Where men are concerned, parang hindi ako confident sa sarili ko. Hindi ako ligawin, e. Nobody is courting me. I don’t have a boyfriend. Kaya, please, nananawagan ako, ligawan n’yo ako!"

Do you think most of your fans are men?

"I think most of fans are kids. Most of those who approach me to have their pictures taken with me are kids. The men? Lumalayo sila. I don’t know why."

Do you think you’ll end up a spinster?

"Diyos ko po, huwag naman sana!"
